Insulation
Check that you have sufficient insulation in the ceiling. Up to 50% of the heat that would normally lost through your ceiling can be saved with good insulation. (Insulation also helps keep rooms cool in summertime.)

Bright Ideas and Handy Tips
-Block off any open and unused fire places to stop warm air going up the chimney

-Seal gaps around doors and windows to stop draughts and keep heat in

-Use thermal-backed curtains that extend 9cm either side of the window-sill

-Use heaters with thermostats and time switches to achieve the comfort-level you want, when and where you need it

-Keep thermostat settings to a comfortable level - we recommend 15 -18oC for background heating and 19 -21oC for living areas

-Heat only the rooms you are using and keep all doors to unheated rooms closed

-Consider using night store heater or heat pump for greater heating efficiency

-Install a ceiling fan for a high ceiling

NightStore Heaters
are ideal for people who are home most of the day or who want steady background heating. The main advantage is that night stores use lower-priced electricity at night and release the heat when it is needed during the day.

Heat Pumps
(or climatisers) use a special heat transfer process that means they produce up to three times the amount of heat per unit of electricity than a normal heater.
