Education

MLL is strongly supportive of education and sees helping Marlborough youth to grow and develop as an integral part of what we do to build a better Marlborough.

We have a range of valuable programmes that we contribute to which support our vision of “Energising Marlborough’s Future”. To read more about some of the programmes please see the information below.

We welcome any new ideas to support youth and education. To send us your idea either contact us or complete a sponsorship application by clicking on the buttons below.

How MLL Supports Marlborough Youth Education and Employment

Marlborough Girls’ College Stars Programme

MLL is principal sponsor of the Stars camp, which all Year 9 students attend as part of the MGC Stars programme. Our sponsorship means that every student can attend the camp free of charge.

The Stars programme is delivered by the Graeme Dingle Foundation Marlborough, and the camp is held at the Outward Bound, Anakiwa site. The programme has proven to achieve excellent outcomes which help our young people flourish as they make the transition to college. It also gives senior students an opportunity to develop their leadership skills which will help them succeed in their future studies and/or careers.

Marlborough Colleges Tertiary Study Awards

MLL supports local students embarking on tertiary study, which we see as an important aspect of growing Marlborough and helping young Marlburians achieve success in their chosen field. Hopefully one day some of those people might also bring their skills, knowledge, and experience back to Marlborough and contribute to our region’s growth.

Each year we select one recipient from each of Marlborough Boys’ College, Marlborough Girls’ College and Queen Charlotte College from a selection of candidates recommended by the colleges. Successful recipients receive an annual amount for the duration of their degree, provided specified criteria are met.

When appropriate we also employ tertiary students during the summer holidays.

Marlborough Youth Trust (MYT)

In support of our commitment to grow Marlborough, we have an ongoing relationship with the Marlborough Youth Trust. Each year we provide two opportunities for a young person to be employed by us for six months in our Stores team. This gives them some work experience and the opportunity to learn valuable skills like working as part of a team, stocktake and picking of stock and being responsible for their own tasks. They also get to see what we do at MLL and gain an insight into the types of roles and opportunities we have here. Where possible, we also train them on the forklift and support them in gaining their forklift license.

Also, as part of the Youth Employability Program (YEP) we give MYT students a tour of our Taylor Pass depot. During the tour they hear from our staff about what they do for MLL and what sort of qualifications and experience are required for each job.

University of Canterbury School of Engineering

MLL supports South Island electricity industry engineering education at the University of Canterbury through our sponsorship of the Electric Power Engineering Centre (EPECentre) and the Power Engineering Excellence Trust (PEET) .

The EPECentre, is a joint initiative between the electricity industry and the University of Canterbury, to bring together industry, researchers, academia and students to foster innovation. The EPECentre’s two distinct areas of operation are Research & Innovation and Education & Outreach. The EPECentre is a leading independent electric power and clean technologies research group, delivering specialist world-class research and innovation. The Centre attracts students into engineering, develops talent and connects industry with those talents.

As members of PEET, we are working to inspire and enable tomorrow’s power engineering talent by sharing responsibility, knowledge and opportunity across academia and industry.
