Arborists
Remove vegetation around power lines and maintain access tracks to ensure line mechanics can reach the lines to repair faults and perform maintenance. The role involves tree climbing, pruning, and chainsaw operation. It often requires staying in remote locations, particularly in the Marlborough Sounds.

 
 

Asset Inspectors
Asset Inspectors carry out routine inspections of overhead and ground-mounted network assets to identify defects and assess their condition. This work supports effective defect management and informs asset replacement and renewal programs. The assets are spread across a 10,000 square kilometre area, including remote locations that may only be accessible on foot. As such, a high level of physical fitness is essential to meet the demands of the role.

 
 

Business & Data Analysts
The Data Analytics Team manages all aspects of MLL’s data. They ensure data is collected through a consistent and standardised process, and they analyse and break down data to provide meaningful insights that support informed decision-making across the organisation.

 
 

Connections Inspector
Reporting to the Customer Works Manager, you will be responsible for ensuring that electrical contractors’ applications for new or modified connections to Marlborough Lines’ network comply with relevant connection requirements and network standards. This includes calculating any development contributions in line with MLL’s capital contributions policy, with guidance from the Customer Works Manager or Commercial Manager. You will communicate connection requirements and processes to applicants, coordinate handover to a Customer Works Design Estimator, and liaise with external stakeholders such as electrical contractors and inspectors. The role also involves supporting business process improvements, ensuring compliance with existing procedures, and performing other related tasks as needed.

 
 

Draughtperson
The Draughtperson’s primary responsibilities include preparing drawings for the network capital programme and maintaining 'as-built' records for both underground and overhead lines. Additional duties involve creating drawings related to network standard construction, maintaining the asset numbering system, and providing support to the Network team.

 
 

Drone Pilot
Operate a drone along designated paths to gather information and capture aerial photographs, including inspections of power poles and lines. The collected data is then provided to our maintenance teams to ensure any damage is identified and repaired as quickly as possible.

 
 

Electricians
Marlborough Lines Registered Electricians are responsible for the electrical maintenance of our buildings, testing equipment, and performing earth and substation testing. They also install and maintain circuit breakers, as well as carry out maintenance on substations and transformers.

 
 

Electrical Engineers
Our Electrical Engineers are responsible for scoping, designing, and leading substation development projects. They carry out general electrical engineering tasks related to project planning and operational work on the Marlborough Lines network. They also support renewable energy generation projects and provide technical support to project managers.

 
 

Faultperson
The faults team is the first point of contact for network faults. Team members are required to hold a current practising licence as either an electrician or a line mechanic, and must have the technical ability to perform work to appropriate safety and quality standards. Their responsibilities include fault location, carrying out minor repairs to lines and cables, switching, and assisting with construction and maintenance when required.

 
 

Finance Team
The Finance team manages all financial operations, including payroll, accounts payable, and invoicing. They monitor work orders within the accounting system to ensure accurate cost coding and financial tracking. Additionally, the team is responsible for maintaining complete and up-to-date asset registers, ensuring all Marlborough Lines Limited (MLL) assets are accurately recorded and accounted for.

 
 

GIS Technician
The GIS Technician’s primary responsibilities include entering as-built and other network-related data into the GIS, connectivity, and asset management systems. Secondary tasks include maintaining records and registers across various systems, and providing data or information to support network projects and issue resolution.

 
 

Health, Safety, Environment & Quality
Our Health & Safety team is responsible for developing, implementing and monitoring & improving all H&S across the business. Building and creating policies and procedures, updating and managing training & reporting and investigating all accidents, incidents and near misses.

 
 

IT Specialists
The IT team is responsible for supporting MLL’s general IT needs. This includes provisioning computers, laptops, mobile phones, and iPads, as well as ensuring all software on MLL devices is up to date and aligned with business requirements. The team also provides technical support and troubleshooting for issues across MLL’s IT systems.

 
 

Line Designers
Coordinate with landowners and other stakeholders to design both overhead and underground power lines, using AutoCAD and other design tools. They are responsible for ensuring that all designs comply with budget constraints, timeframes, quality standards, and safety regulations.

 
 

Line Mechanics & Cable Jointers
Marlborough Lines has approximately 20 Line Mechanics and 10 Cable Jointers carrying out a wide variety of construction and maintenance work in teams suited to each particular job. Work ranges from working alone, unsupervised for minor works to being part of a five- or six-person team for major construction works. This includes installing new lines, poles, transformers, substations and underground cables. For these roles, you must have a relevant electrical qualification such as a Line Mechanics Registration or a National Certificate Level 4 in Cabling or in the case of a trainee, the desire to obtain such qualifications.

 
 

Machine Operators/Truck Drivers
The primary responsibility of this role is to operate the Earthing Truck and Digger for the installation and maintenance of underground earthing conductors within the Marlborough Lines network. The operator is expected to maintain a high level of cooperation and professionalism when dealing with the public, Marlborough Lines customers, and fellow employees. All earthing installations must comply with Marlborough Lines Network Standards, as well as relevant electrical regulations and codes of practice.

 
 

Network Controllers
The role is responsible for ensuring safe access for staff and contractors to the Marlborough Lines network, as well as the safe and continuous supply of electricity to customers. Key duties include producing, checking, and executing switching instructions and authorities for load transfers and planned outages, and liaising with Field Services staff and external contractors regarding planned works. The position involves issuing and returning authorities for work on the network, approving and escalating outage requests, and providing guidance to the Dispatcher on resource requirements. Accurate recording of access and outage events is essential to meet both regulatory and internal reporting standards. The role also includes responding to fault events based on incoming information, producing fault restoration documentation, and ensuring safe, logical, and timely emergency power restoration. Coordinating and directing fault restoration field staff is a core part of the role, alongside working with the Dispatcher, On-Call Fault Person, and Field Services to ensure appropriate fault response resourcing.

 
 

Project Managers
Act as the single point of contact for all project-related enquiries, both internal and external, ensuring clear and consistent communication across all stakeholders. Develop design solutions that meet both customer and network requirements, including the preparation of detailed construction drawings in accordance with relevant MLL network standards. Prepare comprehensive cost estimates that account for all aspects of project delivery, including subcontractor services, equipment, and associated costs. Collaborate with engineering, design, and field personnel to ensure the accuracy and feasibility of designs, incorporating their input as required.

 
 

Receptionists & Administration
Our admin and receptionist roles are key to the smooth running of the business. They provide support to all departments and ensure that customers and visitors to Marlborough Lines are greeted and assisted in a professional and timely manner. Tasks include maintaining accurate billing, delivering excellent customer service, responding promptly to email and phone enquiries, booking staff training and travel, and acting as the point of contact for events, catering, and other administrative needs.

 
 

Solar Specialists
Our Solar Specialists are responsible for delivering solar farms from start to finish. Their work includes installing solar panels and equipment, operating piling machines and telehandlers, carrying out surrounding landscaping, and maintaining the solar farm once it's completed and online.

 
 

Storeperson & Forklift Operators
Storepersons are responsible for managing inwards and outwards goods, maintaining stock levels, and ensuring inventory is well-organised. They also operate forklifts to unload deliveries and help manage the day-to-day operations of the warehouse.

 
 

Underground Cable Locators
Cable Locators are responsible for conducting on-site cable location services for contractors and members of the public upon request. They accurately plot and record the location of cables during installation and retrospectively locate and map existing cables using specialised cable location equipment. In addition to fieldwork, Cable Locators are also responsible for performing regular maintenance checks and reporting on the condition of their designated vehicle and location equipment to ensure operational reliability and safety.

 
 

Vegetation Coordinators
This role involves identifying vegetation within specified areas that is close to or in contact with power lines, using the LiDAR-based vegetation management system. Inspections may be conducted via video review, helicopter, 4WD, boat, on foot, or by any other appropriate method as required. The role also includes assisting with the inspection and recording of track conditions and any necessary maintenance within designated areas. Additionally, it involves consulting with property owners and coordinating with arborists to arrange vegetation trimming and removal.
