Major Project Work on Murphys Road

13/1/2022

Marlborough Lines is undertaking a major project to install new 33kV underground cables along the length of Murphys Road to ensure future security of supply for the Springlands area. The work will be carried out in conjunction with the Marlborough District Council's replacement of the water main and installation of a new sewer line.

What: Installation of new 33kV underground circuits

Where: Murphys Road, Springlands

When:From Mid January 2022 through to the end of June 2022

Why:To improve network security and increase future capacity of the electricity network

What are we doing?
Marlborough Lines is undertaking a major project to install new 33kV underground cables along the length of Murphys Road, from our substation near Old Renwick Road to the existing underground reticulation near Middle Renwick Road. The cable trenches will be installed for the most part within the road berm, crossing from the eastern side of Murphys Road near #26 to the western side near #33.

How will we do it?
Marlborough Lines have engaged local contractors CMT Group to undertake all work involved with the cable installation, including site management and reinstatement. Work will be carried out in sections, digging a trench between cable joint bays, installing the cables and then reinstating the existing surfaces.

How will this affect you?
Because the cable is being laid in three long sections, work may be undertaken outside your property over a number of weeks while the trench is excavated, ducts and cables are installed, cables are tested and joined and then the surface is reinstated.

Work hours are between 7:00am to 5:30pm Monday to Friday, and Saturday between 7:00am and 1:00pm. During this time there will be heavy machinery and truck movements, along with some construction noise, vibration and potentially dust. CMT Group will endeavour to minimise this as much as possible.

Please do not attempt to enter the work areas without first contacting the site supervisor or STMS as there may be hazards present at any time.

Traffic impacts
Murphys Road will be restricted to one lane traffic flow. Initially the north bound lane will be shut off from Middle Renwick Road to just past Springlands School. Detours will be put in place to direct traffic.

Once this section of work is completed the southbound land will be shut off in sections with detours in place to direct traffic.

Planned lane closure dates are:

  • Northbound lane, Middle Renwick Road to Ward Street: 12 January to 2 February, and over the school holidays between 19 April and 9 May.

  • Southbound lane from Ward Street to Roseneath Lane: 3 February to 11 March.

  • Southbound lane from Roseneath Lane to Old Renwick Road: 14 March to 14 April.

These dates are indicative and subject to change. Further information will be provided as the works progress.

We are aware that this area is utilised by the local community for thoroughfare, school and kindergarten access, and parking. Please be assured that all worksites will be managed by qualified traffic management teams to ensure safety of the public and staff while we undertake this important work.

Property access and parking
During the daytime access to properties may be restricted while the contractors trench past. CMT Group will liaise directly with residents as required to make arrangements in this regard. There will be no street parking available on the side of the road where work is being undertaken.

Other impacts
Please put rubbish bins and recycling out early on your collection day (Wednesdays). CMT Group will move these for collection and return as required.

A water shutdown for a few hours during the week beginning 21 March will affect some properties.

We intend to maintain power to all properties throughout the duration of this work.

Where can you get more information?
MLL and CMT Group will provide more information and updates throughout the project via letter drops and website updates.

If you would like to be emailed this information, please email project manager Anna Gifford at anna.gifford@mll.co.nz with Murphys Road Project in the subject line.

Thank you to the local community for your patience and understanding while we complete this work.
