Frequently Asked Questions

  • If you received a Cut or Trim Notice 1, this means your trees are within the Growth Limit Zone and you have three choices to remedy the situation.

    1. If the trees in question are not planted trees, i.e. they are regenerated trees, or they were planted and grew larger than reasonably expected, you may declare No Interest in the trees and MLL will deal to the trees as they see fit.

    2. MLL can arrange to have the trees trimmed, and thereafter the tree owner will be responsible for all future maintenance of the trees.

    3. The tree owner can arrange for their own contractor to undertake the maintenance, and once supplied with a quote which MLL agrees with, MLL will pay for the work to be completed. Going forward the tree owner will be responsible for all future maintenance.

If you received a Cut or Trim Notice 2, this means the tree has previously received a free trim by MLL and the maintenance required is the tree owner’s responsibility. In accord with the Tree Regulations, you have 45 days to get this maintenance attended to. If you require an extension, please contact Marlborough Lines. You must also give us three days’ notice before the maintenance work is carried out.

  • This means your vegetation has reached the Notice Zone and should be cut back before it grows into the Growth Limit Zone.

  • Legally you must take action, otherwise you risk being fined. The Notice will have details regarding the fine and what action you must take.

  • The property owner owns the Service Line and is responsible for keeping trees away from this line.

  • If the power line is situated on a neighbour’s property or on public land, YES, you have a responsibility not to let your trees interfere with those power lines.

If the power line is situated on your land - YES, unless there is an agreement in place where the line owner accepts responsibility for the ongoing maintenance of the tree.

  • This depends on how close the trees are to the power line and what voltage the power line is. Please contact Marlborough Lines for clarification.
