Wairau Valley Upgrade – 33kV Cable Installation

What: Installation of new underground 33kV cables
Where:
State Highway 63, Loddon Lane – Mill Road
When:
Late April – August 2025
Why:
To provide increased capacity in the Wairau Valley, Marlborough

What are we doing?

As part of our commitment to provide a resilient, reliable, and future-proofed electricity network for the region, Marlborough Lines Limited are installing approx. 10km of new 33kV cable alongside State Highway 63 in the Wairau Valley. Installation of the new cable is one component of our overall programme of work to provide increased network capacity in the Wairau Valley.

How will we do it?
Design and specification of the new cable system has been completed by MLL’s in-house team, and following a comprehensive tender process, Fulton Hogan has been appointed by MLL to complete the cable installation work. The majority of the work will be adjacent to the highway, however, there are also a few areas where the new cable will cross beneath the highway.

How will this affect you?
To complete the work, temporary road lane closures will be required on the highway which may result in some minor delay to journey times. Traffic management is to be provided by skilled contractors to ensure the safety of the public and site personnel, and to ensure the smooth flow of traffic and minimal delay.

Will access to my property be affected?
The Fulton Hogan team will arrange the works to ensure that you can still access your property, however the traffic management system may mean that there are slight delays as you enter or exit your property from the highway. The Fulton Hogan team will be in touch with property owners as required during the works.

Will my power be affected?
For this portion of MLL’s upgrade work in the Wairau Valley, your power supply is unlikely to be interrupted; however, should power outages be required, you will be notified in advance by your energy retailer.
